Subject: Phenomenology and Treatment of Tics (Movement Disorder Congress 2002)
Date: 11/20/2002
E-MOVE reports from the Seventh International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, November 10-14 in Miami, Florida. Poster (P), platform session (PL), and page numbers are from Movement Disorders 2002;17(suppl 5).
Questionnaires and chart review of 35 patients with Tourette syndrome revealed that 97% had premonitory sensory phenomena, including an urge to move, a compulsion to tic, increased tension, and other sensations, the majority of which were localized in the muscle. No association was found between type of sensation and type of tic.
2. Tetrabenazine in the treatment of Tourette syndrome CB Hunter, A Wang, KD Vuong, J Jankovic P1131; S340
A chart review was performed of 78 patients with TS treated with tetrabenazine. Mean follow-up was 23 months, and mean daily dose was 52 mg/day. Drowsiness was the main adverse event, followed by nausea/vomiting, depression, and insomnia. Three quarters of the patients had a moderate to marked reduction in abnormal movements and very good to excellent improvement in function, which was maintained during follow-up.
3. Topiramate in the treatment of children and adolescents with Tourette’s syndrome TY Nelson, MT Bost, PS Lesser, JF Hulihan P1134; S342
Retrospective chart review was conducted of 39 patients receiving topiramate as monotherapy (n=7) or add-on therapy (n=32). Mean treatment duration was 7.9 months, dose was 93 mg/day (range 12.5-200). Thirteen patients discontinued, including 4 for side effects (especially fatigue) and 5 for side effects plus inadequate efficacy. Mean improvement in Tic Severity Score vs. baseline was approximately 50% for both add-on and monotherapy groups.
