Subject: Randomized Blinded PD Surgery Comparison (Movement Disorders Congress 2002) Date: 11/27/2002 E-MOVE reports from the Seventh International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, November 10-14 in Miami, Florida. Poster (P), platform session (PL), and page numbers are from Movement Disorders 2002;17(suppl 5).A blinded, randomized comparison of GPi vs. STN stimulation in advanced Parkinson's disease JP Hammerstad, V Anderson, J Favre, P Hogarth, J Burchiel P573;S182 Clinical efficacy is similar for GPi and STN stimulation, but STN stimulation allows greater reduction in levodopa dose, according to this study. Nineteen patients were randomized to bilateral stimulation of either the GPi or STN. At 12-month follow-up, blinded scoring showed no differences in reduction of off-medication UPDRS (approximately 45% reduction for both) or Dyskinesia Rating Scale change (approx. 67% reduction for both). Levodopa use was reduced 36% in STN patients vs. 0% for GPi patients. Insignificant improvements in bradykinesia and gait were seen in STN patients vs. GPi patients, along with significantly lower battery power requirements. ---- 2002 E-MOVE conference reports are made possible in part through unrestricted educational grants from these sponsors: Gold Level: Bertek Pharmaceuticals, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacia Corporation.
