Epidemiology

RS has been reported in various ethnic and geographic populations worldwide. Although the disorder remains under recognized, RS is thought to be a leading cause of mental retardation and neurodevelopmental impairment in females. The frequency of the disorder appears to vary among different populations and geographic regions, ranging from an estimated 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 female births.
